Frequently Asked Questions

Why should someone consider using a content management system for their web site? What are some of the advantages and disadvantages?

Well, as the name implies, perhaps the principal reason for adopting a content management system is to give the control of the management/updating of their web site, or parts of it, to the client, thus minimising ongoing maintenance costs involved in dependency on an external web designer.

Itsnoprob's content management system does not require advanced computer skills but rather just basic proficiency.

But a content management system that can be used by non-web designers must ensure a clear separation between design and content to avoid the structure or fundamental design of the web site being corrupted. Itsnoprob's system does.

Another advantage of our system is that is Internet-based - the client can access and add to or edit the content management elements of their site via an Internet browser such as Internet Explorer or Firefox - so the content management system is available anywhere/any time through an Internet connected computer. There's no complicated software to download and learn and we can provide you with the support you need to get up and running and comfortable ASAP!

So what are the main potential downsides of content management?

The skills required to effectively use any content management system increase in relation to the complexity of the web page(s) being content managed.

This FAQs section, for example, is run by our content management system and is extremely easy to update.

But a web page that is required to be completely content managed - all the content to entered by the client, in other words - with headings, text, graphics, links, response forms, a complicated layout, Flash elements, video, possibly payment options, etc., etc., would require a different skill set and may well be best left to a reliable web designer.

Many clients want, understandably, at the outset of their project, to have control over their web site content but it can lead to problems because, for example:

  • there are not suitable internal staff available

  • staff turnover leads to an inability to continue to maintain the site

  • mistakes are made that lead to either ugly or inconsistent presentation of web pages (a disaster given that a probably not insignificant investment will have been made in the development of the site)

  • the content management system isn't used immediately after its introduction and any required training or induction. The required knowledge is therefore lost. Paying for a content management system and then having to return to your web designer to maintain the site on your behalf is clearly not the most cost-effective approach!
