Looking for a simple forum for your WordPress site? |
Forums can be a big plus – even essential – for many web sites, encouraging dialogue with, and retention of, web site visitors. But, choosing and implementing an effective forum can be time consuming and frustrating. Just installing and configuring some forum software can induce a severe migraine! And then there's the administration of the forum, security considerations to worry about, let alone prompting and encouraging ongoing participation… Don't get us wrong – there are are some forum solutions that we've tried and been perfectly happy with – phpBB, for example, or, perhaps especially Simple Machine Forum. They are really powerful, well established forums that will probably provide you with all the features that you could want…and then some. What, though, if you want something much simpler, for use by a relatively low number of users, much easier to implement and something that will easily integrate within a WordPress site? We tried a few options, but have finally started to work with the bbPress plugin. (Screenshot below) |

We had a test forum up and running within a few hours and so far, so good. The bbPress plugin certainly hasn't got a wide range of features, but for our purposes that's probably just as well. We want the forum to be as easy to administer as it is to use for basic forum communications. The only drawback for us is the inability to hide the contents of the forum from unregistered users but we're going to try and resolve this through a membership system plugin. Setting up a forum isn't something most people want to every day (year?!!), so minimising the pain was an important consideration for us. I have read that bbPress is moving from a 'standalone' application, with the focus to be on the plugin. Hopefully this will mean increased features and improvements to come. I hope our positive first impressions are justified when the application's properly tested.

Do you need a mobile version of your web site? |
The mobile Net is great, giving people access to information and services when they are on the move. BUT, when you browse the web on your mobile device how many sites do you come across that are virtually impossible to view on your phone? We all know the limited attention span of the average Internet user, even when accessing sites via their desktop or laptop machine, so how many people are going to stick around if they need superhuman eyesight to glean even the basics of what a web site is all about? So what we are suggesting is that you might need a bespoke, abridged version of your web site, specifically for those viewing it on mobile devices, whether iPhone, Android or BlackBerry. Your first, totally understandable, reaction might be:

Twitter can help get your message to a wider audience |
Traditionally, in the world of the Net, a priority of webmasters seeking to generate traffic for their web site has been search engine optimisation to achieve the highest possible search rankings for relevant search terms, with the overriding objective of ranking highly in Google. And this is still an important aim, as, after all, high 'organic' rankings generate free traffic! But the growth of social media, with perhaps Twitter and Facebook being the most significant channels, has provided more avenues to the web site owner to broaden site awareness and to grow and retain visitor numbers. Whilst it is true that many corporate organisations continue to struggle with the role that social media should platy in their marketing strategy, we would recommend at least experimentation with Twitter.
Why?
Because in a world where time is limited and priorities are many, Twitter provides several tools for 'broadcasting' your message that are both quick and easy to implement and quick and easy to use.
And, of course, they are free!
A large part of the point of Twitter is that it isn't rocket science so there's no need to recruit or train a rocket scientist before you take your first steps into the ever expanding world of social media!
