Do you need a mobile version of your web site?   Printer friendly page

The mobile Net is great, giving people access to information and services when they are on the move.

BUT, when you browse the web on your mobile device how many sites do you come across that are virtually impossible to view on your phone?

We all know the limited attention span of the average Internet user, even when accessing sites via their desktop or laptop machine, so how many people are going to stick around if they need superhuman eyesight to glean even the basics of what a web site is all about?

So what we are suggesting is that you might need a bespoke, abridged version of your web site, specifically for those viewing it on mobile devices, whether iPhone, Android or BlackBerry.

Your first, totally understandable, reaction might be:

'You've got to be kidding!

I spent long enough establishing the 'main' version of my web site.

I've got a business or organisation to run and, even though I understand what you're saying, life and business is about priorities, and I just haven't got the time or resources for this"

Twitter can help get your message to a wider audience   Printer friendly page

Traditionally, in the world of the Net, a priority of webmasters seeking to generate traffic for their web site has been search engine optimisation to achieve the highest possible search rankings for relevant search terms, with the overriding objective of ranking highly in Google.

And this is still an important aim, as, after all, high 'organic' rankings generate free traffic!

But the growth of social media, with perhaps Twitter and Facebook being the most significant channels, has provided more avenues to the web site owner to broaden site awareness and to grow and retain visitor numbers.

Whilst it is true that many corporate organisations continue to struggle with the role that social media should platy in their marketing strategy, we would recommend at least experimentation with Twitter.

Why?

Because in a world where time is limited and priorities are many, Twitter provides several tools for 'broadcasting' your message that are both quick and easy to implement and quick and easy to use.

And, of course, they are free!

A large part of the point of Twitter is that it isn't rocket science so there's no need to recruit or train a rocket scientist before you take your first steps into the ever expanding world of social media!

Can other media such as video be included within WordPress content?   Printer friendly page

Yes, certainly.

The promotional video for one of our clients, Fircroft College, is a good example of this. This is original video converted and compressed into Flash format to give the best and widest presentation on the Net.

Get Adobe Flash player

You Tube Videos

Embedding You Tube videos is even easier. You Tube generates the code for you to embed the video within your posts or pages, as in this example.

Note: Reload the page if the video does not appear first time - we are dependent on the link to You Tube as that is where the video is ‘sitting’.

Similarly, inserting audio is a breeze. Put your feet up and listen to a few short tracks from Naresh Sohal, a unique voice in contemporary classical music.

Naresh

Born in Punjab in 1939, and a long-time resident of the UK, Sohal’s work spans two cultures. As a British composer, he writes fluently in the Western idiom: as an Asian composer, he draws heavily on the insights of Indian philosophy.

Sometimes Less Words Means More Communication!   Printer friendly page

ABrett300w

This is not a WordPress site – content management, for example, not being a prime requirement – but we still want to tell you about the latest site developed and launched by Itsnoprob…

People's attention span on the Net is notoriously short and you have very little time to get your message across and, hopefully, retain your visitors' attention.

The Arthur Brett Catering web site that has just gone live on the Net is an example of a site that seeks to let images communicate the client's message while keeping words to a minimum.

But images have to be high quality, relevant and well presented…

Visit the web site and decide for yourself whether it succeeds in conveying the client's central message of fresh, natural produce?

What are Widgets?   Printer friendly page

Widgets are a great feature within WordPress, allowing blogmasters to add functonality to their site without having to understand the coding that lies behind them!

Widgets appear within the sidebar(s) of WordPress blogs and are easily implemented by drag-and-drop from within the WordPress online Administration or Control Panel – once they have been uploaded to the site of course.

There are a great number of widgets available to blogmasters and there is a temptation to add as many as possible, believing that this will increase the sophistication and popularity of the site, but care should be taken to install only those widgets that:

  • Add value to your site
  • You have tested and confirmed work as advertised
  • Other blogmasters appear to endorse as reliable and effective
  • You can configure to meet your requirements

As with all software, widgets can be of variable quality and can sometimes do more harm than good.

Blogmasters also need to bear in mind the implications of adding plug-ins to the core functions of WordPress for web site maintenance and security… For example:

  • Is adding yet another widget worth the possible increased security risks presented by third-party coding?
  • Will a widget genuinely add value to your blog?
  • What will you do if you find that the widget no longer functions as you upgrade your version of WordPress over time?
  • Can you test a widget you might want to use on a development WordPress site before implementing on your live blog?

Carefully chosen, reliable widgets can greatly enhance your blog with little effort, but can is not necessarily the same as will!

Make sure you have something worth promoting BEFORE you start promoting!   Printer friendly page

WPPost300w

You want people to come flocking to your newly launched WordPress site, to be impressed by what they find and to keep coming back again and again – you want to generate traffic, visitor engagement and retention.

So where should you start…?

Hiring a 'Google professional' who promises to get your site to number one spot in Google by the weekend?

Writing a 100-page marketing plan that will be your pathway to Internet success?

Spending days sending begging e-mails to other webmasters requesting links to your site?

Implementing the latest brilliant idea that suddenly came to you at 3 in the morning?

Do you feel out of your depth?

Well, you shouldn't. The most important element by far in the promotion and marketing of your site is totally under your control and within your competence – your web site's content!

The quality and topicality of your site content should always be your absolute priority regardless of any other actions you take to increase awareness of your site.

Your site needs to have regularly updated, well-presented content that visitors, interested in your area of expertise, will find of value. Otherwise, you might as well forget your Internet ambitions at the outset.

Putting in place a thought through marketing programme, whilst essential, can wait until you are confident you have this critical prerequisite in place. You need to have confidence in the ongoing quality of your message/offering – otherwise, how are you going to convince others of its merits?

So, look, perhaps for the umpteenth time, ultra critically at your WordPress web site or blog and ask yourself, "Is it as good as I can make it and have I plans in place to make sure this quality is sustained?"

If the answer's "No", you know what you need to do before you make that call to the slick Google professional!
